The extensive collection of furniture at Atlanta History Center contains a variety of uses and forms for an individual’s comfort, relaxation, and work. Chairs—seating furniture—are only one small component of the full collection.
The chairs shown in the installation dated across approximately 225 years and include significant design styles, including Queen Anne, Chippendale, Federal, Greek Revival, and more. Most of the chairs came through generous donations from previous owners or their descendants between 1949 and 2012. Many are from the decorative arts collection assembled by the architect of Swan House, Philip Trammell Shutze, given as a bequest from him in 1982.
