Examine badges that belonged to William Everson, a free man of color from the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, and Benjamin George Hannon, a formerly enslaved man, from the 97th Regiment of the United States Colored Infantry. Before service member identification tags became standard military issue items, soldiers purchased and used their own badges for identification in case of injury or death during the U.S. Civil War.
