How did hosting the 1996 Summer Olympics shape the city of Atlanta?
From the decision to host the games to their lasting effect on Atlanta’s neighborhoods, the 1996 Summer Olympics were a pivotal moment for the city of Atlanta. This tour uses our extensive Atlanta ’96 exhibit, as well as historic resources, and interactive learning tools to engage students in self-exploration as well as facilitated discussion. Students will come away with a deeper understanding of short and long-term political, economic, and social impacts of this momentous event. Plus, teachers and students will receive a study worksheet for post-tour review and a follow up activity.

All Guided School Tours are from 10am–12pm Monday–Friday.*
*If a school tour is booked on a Monday, please note that the museum is not open to the general public. Atlanta History Center will provide schools full access to the designated tour areas. However, additional spaces, exhibitions, historic homes, gardens, and the museum shop will be closed. The outdoor picnic areas are still available for groups that choose to have lunch onsite.

This tour size is limited to 80 students.
There is no cost for students and the required number of chaperones for Title I schools.
Guided tours require one chaperone (admitted free) per 10 students.
A fee of $11.50 will be applied for each additional chaperone.

A non-refundable $50 deposit is due 14 days after confirmation is received.
Full payment is due 3 weeks prior to the date of your visit to guarantee your reservation for all tours. If you book less than 3 weeks in advance, full payment is due at the time of booking.
Any updates to your student count must be made before final payment is due. Refunds are not available if the number of students has changed. Additional fees for specialty tours, experiences, and other services are also due.
Your payment is not refundable if you cancel your school tour and do not reschedule.
To reschedule your tour, you must notify Atlanta History Center at least 3 days in advance of your tour date. Your payment can be applied towards your new date. There is a $25 administrative fee to reschedule your tour.
These lesson plans are specifically designed to support both in-person and virtual school tours offered by Atlanta History Center; however, they are available for use by any educator. Atlanta History Center encourages teachers to preview all materials prior to use to determine the appropriateness for their particular grade level and students.
